The hostel I was staying at had free breakfast and so the next day, I got some taco-like breakfast wraps. They were made with beans and roasted peppers and onions. They were quite good. That day, I decided to take a trip to the Floating Gardens Xochimilco or the “Venice of Mexico City”. It was a Sunday and that's why I went there on this day, if I recall. The weekend was the best time to go there.
It was quite far south of the city but apparently worth it to spend an afternoon/day there. It took me about an hour and a half to get there by public transport. I had to take the underground subway and then a light rail train… and then walk for 20 minutes! But it was fun, I was exploring right?
I saw some cool things along the way:
Chillin'
AMLO
The walk...
The whip.
Just chillin'.
Making tortillas.
I arrived just before lunch time. After asking around, I found out it was 500 pesos ($34 CAD) for a one hour trip as you basically rent the entire boat. That was a bit too much for me, so I ended up sharing the boat ride with a couple of Americans. They were from New York, so I knew not to talk about the Knicks. They had brought some beers and they shared them with me as we want on this boat ride. It was cool! Not quite how I imagine Venice, but cool nonetheless. The scenery around was average but the boats were fascinating.
On the water!
The highlight for me was trying something called an Elote. Its corn with mayo/butter and sour cream, chilli powder and lime in a Styrofoam cup.
Elotes!
Devoured the Elote.
Driving the boat.
Signed my name on the boat!
There were also Mariachi bands and large Mexican families celebrating birthdays on other boats, making for an entertaining ride. I then explored the area and made my way back.
Performers!
Crazy.
I met some folks at the hostel and hung out with them for the evening the hostel bar. We ended up going out for dinner and sharing a bunch of food at some restaurant. I should have taken photos, but you'll have to trust me the food was good. There was a lot of cheese.
We then went out for drinks and ended up stopping by this taco stand: Tacos Los Cucoyos. The best tacos! I would make many trips to this place over the next few days.
